How Much RAM and Storage Do You Actually Need?
The two upgrades that make an old machine feel new, and the simple checks that tell you which one you actually need.

If your computer has become slow and it still has a mechanical hard disk, fit an SSD first. Nothing else comes close. If it already has an SSD and still struggles with several applications open, the problem is RAM. Those two sentences cover the overwhelming majority of "my computer is slow" complaints we see.

There's a common misunderstanding worth clearing up: adding RAM beyond what you use does nothing. It isn't a speed dial. If you never exceed 10 GB, going from 16 to 32 changes nothing you'll notice. The gain comes from eliminating the shortage, not from the number.
How to check whether you're actually short
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and go to the Performance tab.
- Work normally for a while with everything open that you'd typically use.
- Watch Memory. If you're consistently above about 80%, you're short.
- Also check the Disk figure. If that sits near 100% while memory is high, Windows is swapping to disk — the classic cause of a machine that freezes intermittently.
Storage: what to buy
Three tiers, and the gap between the first and second is enormous:
- NVMe SSD — the fastest, plugs into an M.2 slot on the board. What every new machine should boot from.
- SATA SSD — slower than NVMe but still transformative next to a hard disk. Useful for older machines with no M.2 slot.
- Hard disk — slow, but far cheaper per terabyte. Ideal as secondary bulk storage for media, backups and CCTV footage. Never as a boot drive.
On capacity: 512 GB is the practical minimum for a working machine, 1 TB comfortable, 2 TB if you keep games or video. A sensible pattern for desktops is a 1 TB NVMe for Windows and programs plus a large hard disk for bulk files — fast where speed matters, cheap where it doesn't.

Can your machine take it?
Two things decide it. Are the RAM slots occupied or free, and is the RAM soldered? Many thin laptops solder memory to the board, which makes it permanently non-upgradeable. Desktops are almost always upgradeable. For storage, most laptops from the last several years have an M.2 slot, and often a spare one.
